Media Studies (S6) We now offer Higher and Intermediate 2 and 1 Media Studies courses and they have proved an extremely popular option. They are particularly suited to students who wish to progress to the study of media at college or university and forge a career in television, radio, film or newspapers.
The course is divided into two main areas: ANALYSIS and PRODUCTION.
For the ANALYSIS unit, pupils learn about the seven key aspects of the media – Language, Categories, Narrative, Ideology, Audience, Institution, and Technology. Pupils study both FICTION and NON-FICTION texts. They must pass a NAB for both of these.
For the PRODUCTION unit, pupils learn about practical aspects of the media such as film-making, storyboarding and editing. Pupils work in groups to produce films which are then screened at the Glasgow Film Theatre at the end of the year. A NAB must be passed for this element of the course also.
Higher and Intermediate 2 EXAMS last for two hours; the Intermediate 1 Exam lasts for one hour. Part 1 concerns ANALYSIS, where the pupil writes about either the fiction text OR the non-fiction text studied. Part 2 concerns PRODUCTION, where the pupil can write about his/her experience of film-making.
Throughout the year, there are UNSEEN ANALYSIS assessments. A previously unseen text (such as a film trailer or film poster) is shown to pupils who then examine the text in terms of categories and language. The best Unseen Analysis produced by a pupil is then sent off in a folio that counts for 20% of the overall grade.
